History & Owner Information
History
Skylark Hall dates back to 1443, with remains of that time still visible through the castellated courtyard and paddock. Build with care, the cellar and the foundations remain as they were.
It is believed that the main parts of the house got destroyed during the Civil War as an act of vandalism. In the 1770s when the Trans Dartmoor road construction began, so did the reconstruction of the local buildings. This style can be seen in the east wing of the house. In 1787 Mr Buller later rewarded the title Sir Buller, who was the youngest Court Judge in the British Courts, build the mansion you can enjoy today. At a young age of 17, he married a local woman who inherited quite a bit of money. As the village at the time did not have a church the main sitting room served as a place of worship until a local church was constructed. Mr Buller also builds a local pub, nowadays known as the Two Bridges Hotel. After his death in 1800 Skylark Hall was bought by the Gullet Family who used it as a big farmhouse.
In 1806 the Princetown’s war prison was funded where they hold French and American prisoners. At that time this big house in Devon became home to French aristocratic Officer and their servants. The house continued to be a farm throughout the 19th Century and later became home to the Barrington family. It is believed that during this time Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at the Hall where he received an inspiration to write The Hound of Baskervilles.
At the break of the Century, the house became a hotel, to which they later added a golf course. The hotel was closed throughout WWI and later became a loving home to the Lewellyn family. In 1945 Skylark Hall was bought by Lord and Lady Astor and later gave the house to a local charity for deprived children. 2 decades later the house was bought by a lady prison doctor, Dr Bentley. After her death, the house was sold and turned into a hotel which opened in 1985.
Today, the house is in the loving hands of a local owner who pays great attention to detail and assures that his guests have a superb stay.
